Home What we take
No surprises

What we take, and what we can't

We take almost everything: household clutter, garden waste, garage and shed contents, old furniture, appliances, the lot. A handful of things we can't take by law, and a few cost a little extra to dispose of properly. Here's the honest list, so there are no surprises on the day.

We can't take

  • Paint and other chemicals
  • Gas canisters
  • Asbestos
  • Large quantities of food waste
  • Human waste
  • Motor oil and similar oils
  • Lithium batteries (ordinary car batteries are fine — it's specifically lithium ones we can't take, as they're a fire risk in the van and at the tip)

A little extra for these, and why

A few items cost more to dispose of properly, so we charge a bit extra for them rather than hide it in the price. Here's why:

  • Mattresses. Increasingly restricted from general waste, so they need their own disposal route.
  • Fridges and freezers. Classed as electrical waste. The refrigerant gas has to be safely removed before disposal, which costs more at the tip.
  • Sofas and foam furniture. Under the POPs regulations, older foam-filled furniture has to be incinerated at high temperature rather than recycled, which is a pricier route.
  • Tyres. Regulated separately and go through their own recycling process, not general waste.
